Is web development a good career to choose?
Will there be sustained/increased demand for web development professionals in the near and far future?
I would suggest that web developers will definitely be in demand in the future. The web is growing faster than any other creative industry. As the internet gets faster, the web will be far less restrictive than it is now and developers will be needed to do the ‘other’ part of the creative/ad cycle. It is also well paid. Not many people have the skills that a developer possesses, so you become a valuable asset to a creative team – and they’ll pay to keep you around.

Well the Internet is not going to go away anytime soon, or be replaced by anything, yes it will evolve, but what to, no-one really knows yet.
That said I am a professional web design, and have been since 1991, when the www was first invented, when I started html was the new language! So long as you keep learning the new languages that come out and are good at what you do then yes there will always be a demand for web professionals. Since 1991 I have learnt html, javascript, Java, ASP, PHP, C#, ASP.net to name a few plus some standalone languages as well. You might say that some of those languages aren’t needed anymore, but I disagree simply because I am working on anywhere between 30 – 40 sites per week and some of them have been online for 10 years and use nothing more than basic html.
I still believe that the majority of businesses don’t fully understand the power of the Internet and how it can make/break their businesses.
In short this is one industry that is always going to evolve and change, as a developer, you have to sink or swim!

There will definitely be growth in demand for developers in the future. The web is growing at a crazy rate, and more and more businesses are looking for ways to improve their existing online presence.
One thing to keep in mind is to specialize, but always be prepared for that specialization to be outdated – so you need be willing to learn new technologies, but once you understand a few skills in the biz, it’s easy to do.
Also, a good education is very very important. You will be far more respected and employable than someone who taught themselves because you are far more likely to be exposed to proper techniques.
