Just make sure that they (1) have done successful projects and (2) can repeat the process for your project. I am thinking of going into either web development or web design. I know the small differences but what I really want to know is which one makes more money? If I am going to choose one of these as a career path, I want to make the best choice I can.

A web designer focuses more on the looks of the site : the way it is arranged, the graphics, etc.

The web developer is the one that focuses on how the site works, the type of coding (CSS, PHP, Flash, JavaScript, HTML, security, etc) or interface.

I guess comparing them both would be like comparing an architect and an structural engineer. The latter one would probably have more job opportunities since that takes more studying.

Examples:

Front end – web pages that users interact with & Javascript validation

Most traditional website developing software such as iWeb or the like often do not provide the features you have discussed in your original post. I would suggest you build your website around an existing open source Custom Management System (CMS) such as Joomla or Drupal.

A little information on drupal: the way it works is it gives you an engine to which you can then expand by adding various "modules" — You can read more on their website.

Employers do not care whether or not you have a degree. As long as you have a degree they are happy. I taught my self to be a web developer and I am self employed.

Tools: Photoshop for graphics, Notepad++ for code.
