2007 elk hunt

This is Amit and I in Western Montana on the last day of the 2007 elk season (our first elk season). The video makes the whole thing look pretty easy, but this is not the case. After hiking close to 100 miles and spending 70+ hours tromping through elk country we did manage to score on a decent bull. Little did we know that the hunting was the easy part! The video also makes the distance I was shooting at the elk much greater than it actually was. The shots (there were 4) were around 200 yards. Two connected, one in the liver and one in a lung and it died very quickly. Thanks to Anne and Brooke for sacrificing their bodies and 6 hours of their Sunday to drag that elk 1 mile. It was incredibly brutal, but well worth it. I can’t stop thinking about the whole experience and am eagerly awaiting my chance to try again next year! Finally, thanks to the elk who made the ultimate sacrifice to bring us this video and a whole years supply of delicious meat.

What is that dark tower along I-90 in western Montana?

I was driving to Seattle from Omaha on I-90. Soon after I left one of the cities, I think either Butte or Missoula, I saw a brown/black tower in the distance on my left. Anybody have an idea what that is?

The only thing I can think of is in Frenchtown. (west of Missoula) It is part of a manufacturing facility.

Why has Hannah Montana become the Country Western Icon?

I love cowboy boots!
Straw Hats are practical and attractive. They’re cooling, keep the sun out of your eyes, and they look nice.
I love flowing skirts and tight jeans.
Tanktops and tshirts are a part of my everyday decor, but I also can dress up nice too.
That’s just my style. I love the western look.
I grew up wearing stuff like that. And where I come from, everyone dresses like that. But, however, when I was visiting with my family we went out to eat and wore my boots and straw hat to the restaraunt. These girls (must have been about 16 to 17) were eating with there mom and when I walked in they looked at me and started laughing and started screaming "Oh look it’s Hannah Montana. Oh hi hannah montana!" I brushed it off, because I’ve gotten past that point of caring what other people think about me, but it kind of made me mad to be compared to a child’s pop star.

I think Hannah Montana is cute, and I respect where she came from, but I don’t consider her to be country or western. I think LA has changed her and she’s more of the pop feel now.

Why is it that whenever people hear country music, or see cowboy boots or any western anything, Hannah Montana comes to mind? It drives me crazy!

Well didn’t Miley say she hated country music? She isn’t even close to being the face of country music. The only reason anyone in country music knows her name is because of her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. The honor of country music icon belongs to George Jones, an old time country singer and one of the greatest.

Could i afford to live in Montana?

I’m training to become a park ranger and i would like to live and work on the western side of montana. I have a wife and kids… I have a four year degree and went threw police academy ext.

If you can’t afford to live in Montana, you probably can’t afford to live anywhere in the US.

How are american persons from western states?

Varies on the individual. But compared to ppl in more populous states like California, Texas, Florida and New York, they often have more traditional, God-based principles.

What’s it like to live in Montana?

I’m from IL and I’m planning to move somewhere in the western mountains. I love the outdoors, and I love communities where everyone knows everyone. I need a little help though on what’s it like to live in Montana. Is winter really that bad in Montana? What month will it feel like summer? 50+ degrees.
And if you may, please share anything about this wonderful state. Thanks.

Well, Montana is the last of the west. If you can’t survive then don’t even bother coming over. We still don’t like out-of-staters very well though. But IL wouldn’t be too much problem…CA and WA are extremely hated here. First off, we have no summer. Its only hunting season, winter, spring and construction season. In MT it can literally snow whenever no matter the date. I have had more than one 4th of July morning wakeup to over a half inch of fresh snow. MT gets cold. This last winter was the warmest in the last 20 years. We only had one week at our ranch w/a high of -10. Usually we’ll have highs of -25 and lows of -60 for about a month during the winter. Summer temps rarely get over 90 degrees Fahrenheit I’m sure in towns, it’s a bit warmer. If you love small communities, then MT is good because there are several towns still w/fewer than 70 people in them. Only problem is they may not like you in return. We also have our own unique laws and ways. For every 15 people, there is a bar. Everyone hunts, fishes, or at least enjoys the outdoors. As a kid growing up, we are a state where guns = everything. You learn how to shoot when you learn how to read, if not before hand. We are also a state where by law and under certain circumstances we can still legally hang people and shoot them. For instance, trespassing alone can result in death. We only have to give you a 30 second warning, before we pull the trigger. Montana is a traditionalist state. Don’t be surprised if you see a tractor driving down the highway or a herd of horses running through a town in between pastures. We are also a state where the wildlife have more right than you. If you’re scared of wolves or grizzly bears, then don’t even bother. All of the west of MT (all of the mountains) are grizzly and wolf territory. I run into grizzlies or wolves sometimes everyday depending on the location in the state. There are more cons however…no sales tax but average salaries are very low. A lot of jobs are near or around the min. federal hourly wage. Unless you have a doctorate degree or a specific bachelors degree, don’t plan on making over $40k a year. Jobs are also hard to come by and you will spend months (maybe years) to find a job. Montana is a self-sufficient state that is inhabited by only those who can survive it. At college I see A LOT of out-of-staters who think they can survive in MT and literally run back home crying and their tail between their legs by the end of the school year if not semester. So, the question is, are you sure you can handle it?
