The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is an aggressive and easily excitable creature that
usually does not attack offensively. Attacks are typically brought about when the snake
feels threatened. When attacking, the snake will usually only use its venom as a last
resort, instead coiling up its body, erecting its head and vibrating its tail. The vibration of
the tail acts as a warning to predators of the snake. The snake may also leave the area,
taking cover under bushes, logs or rocks.

The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake lives in dry, rocky, shrub covered open terrain
where they are able to conceal themselves in cracks in the rocks as well as in holes in the
ground.
References :
http://www.northwestwildlife.com/articles/diamondback_rattlesnake.pdf

Comment on Question about Idle ram and registry cleaners? by Spam

Hi Hal

1.5 GB does seem slightly high, mine uses just over 1 GB under light load.

However, depends on what background programs you have running.

Worth checking MSCONFIG to see if any programs/services are starting on boot that you don't need. These would occupy RAM when idle.

Also, in task manager (right click the taskbar and click 'task manager'), goto the 'processes' tab, and it should show you how much RAM each process is using.

As for registry cleaners. There CAN be some benefit to cleaning out the registry, if mass uninstalling/installing has occurred, or other such large scale changes to the resgitry have occured.

HOWEVER, best to generally leave it well alone.

I always found CCleaner to be not bad for a quick registry work over. But I would not use it more than once, and it will delete key (not as in important, but as in actual key) values, that will simply be rebuilt next time you reboot, and thus wont change a thing, but may instead, accidentally cause a corruption or error while cleaning the registry, registering your windows installation broken, until you can fix that registry issue.

The best way to maintain your PC is:

1. regular reboots (e.g. don't always put it to sleep (if you do) but reboot occasionally)

rebooting clears alot of temp files not needed anymore, and finalizes some installs into registry.

2. Uninstall Programs/Delete Files Not Needed

Anything you don't need on your computer, don't have on your computer. The more stuff on it, the most stuff can go wrong. Delete everything you can, and then:

3. Defrag

Providing you aren't using an SSD (you would know if you were, and thus would presumably know not to defrag an SSD.):

Only really needs to be done every couple of months, and even then, with windows 7, unless you are constantly installing/uninstalling, moving about hundreds of files and programs, you most likely wont really need to do it at all.

And, finally, as a last resort, if you can, and know how, the best thing for a PC is a clean install of the operating system. Clean installing windows 7 would make your PC good as new (obviously), however, obviously again, only do this if you know what you are doing.

Good luck :D
References :
Yes it is very normal for 1.5GB of RAM to be used while idle in vista/win7. And on all PC's DWM and explorer take up the most RAM, explorer controls the taskbar, desktop icons, and folder navigation windows, while DWM controls things like the Aero glass windows transparency etc.

I do not recommend using registry cleaners, the best case scenario is only a very small difference, and the worst case scenario is potentially huge.
References :
AVG is fine but 1.5G of 4G is perfectly normal on a small laptop or netbook. If your CPU usage is onl 2%, you are not challenging your computer. My CPU usage on my netbook is normally in the 60% zone (I use it for work and home).
