what kinds of different flowers will grow good in a raised flower bed that spends approx 3/4 of the day in the shade? i live in western Montana.

depends on what u want. new guinea impatients thrive in shady spots as do some begonias. you can plant lobelia amoungst them too. best bet is to go to ur local nursery and see what shade seedlings they have for the season!
do some research on google about shade flower varieties, check their requirements

Most of the plants require sunlight for flowering. Even those plants which bear flowers in shade do require atleast some partial sunlight, or they demand sunlight atleast for a couple of days in a week. That means the potted plants which are kept indoors need exposure to direct sun light now and then. Your question is regarding the species which grow in partial sunlight and give flowers. As your flower beds are not portable, you have only few varieties such as Spathyfyllum, and some orchid varieties. It is more advisable to go for some plants which grow in semi shade but bear coloured foliage like Collius, Cordylines, and some of the shade grass spp.like Hoffiopogans.
