I've had good luck with Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. it will make a backup so you can revert if there's a problem.

If you get a pretty reputable one, they probably won’t cause any problems. However, since they are messing around with the Windows Registry (the backbone of the entire system), there is always a possibility of problems.

However, even if you get a good one, there is very little evidence to suggest that they do any good. Here’s an article that explains why registry cleaners shouldn’t be used as part of a computer cleaning routine.

So unless you have a specific problem with your registry, staying out of it is the best idea.

Your registry gets as "dirty" as your hard drive gets fragmented and yet there is no registry cleaner built into Windows. It really should be.

A registry that is clogged with entries with no valid associations means that your PC is searching for info longer and harder than it should, and it does slow your computer down.

I purchased Registry Mechanic about 2 years ago and have been using it faithfully ever since. I recently downloaded a FREE one called Registry Distiller and it seems to work every bit as good as the one I bought.

Registry Distiller is FREE and is available at http://www.download.com Just search on it, download it and installed. You should run it as a minimum of once a week.

Some people love using them. Personally I don’t advocate the use of registry cleaners for those that aren’t familiar with their use or with the registry because a lot of damage can be done if used incorrectly.

NOTE: Before running any registry cleaner or editing the registry, always ensure you back it up first. If the registry cleaner you are using doesn’t have that function, you can do it manually. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

try reducing startup items.
Click Start->run->msconfig
then go to startup tab. Remove unnecessary programs. Don’t ever with mess with the other tabs or else your OS won’t boot properly anymore
