That gives the water a chance to soak in and any left on the leaves will dry up and not cause problems. Also the wind in Montana can be a real problem as you well know. This will give the water time to be absorbed by the grass/plants and ground before the sun becomes too stron, but not having it sit on the blades of grass for too long. Doing it in the evening has the problem of the water sitting on the grass/plants too long and potentially allowing fungus or disease to develop or spread. If you have a sprinkler system this is easy to do - just set the time for 5 or 6am. Second best is EARLY A.M....but if you water at night there is a lot less evaporation and so you will get the biggest benefit...Also to keep your grass greener, make sure you water after you mow.
